Gorilla trekking in Rwanda or Uganda is one of the most humbling and unforgettable wildlife experiences on Earth.
As thrilling as it sounds, it also requires a bit of preparation—both physically and mentally. Whether you’re hiking in Volcanoes National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, or Mgahinga, here are 5 tips to make your first gorilla trek incredible from start to finish.
Train Your Legs (and Your Mind)
Gorilla trekking isn’t a walk in the park—literally. You could hike anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are. Trails can be steep, muddy, and covered in thick
Tip: Try a few long hikes before your trip. Add stairs and inclines to build endurance. And most importantly—come with a mindset of adventure, not luxury.
Dress for the Jungle, Not the Gram
Your safari outfits may look great on Instagram, but the jungle doesn’t care. What you really need:
- Long sleeves and pants (to avoid nettles and insects)
- Waterproof hiking boots (broken-in!)
- Gaiters or thick socks (to protect ankles)
- Gardening gloves (optional—but handy for grabbing vines)
- A rain jacket (even in the dry season)
Bonus: Neutral colors are best. Brights can spook wildlife.

Pack Smart & Light
You won’t want to lug a big bag uphill. Essentials only:
- 2 liters of water
- Light snacks or energy bars
- Bug spray
- Sunscreen
- Tissues/wipes
- A camera (no flash!)
Porters are available and highly recommended—not just for your bag, but as local income earners who know the terrain.
