Overview
Uganda is a landlocked country located in East Africa. It is bordered by South Sudan to the north, Kenya to the east, Tanzania to the south, Rwanda to the southwest, and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. The country has a population of over 47.6 million people and covers an area of 241,038 square kilometers. The capital and largest city of Uganda is Kampala.
Uganda is named after the Buganda kingdom, which encompasses a large portion of the south of the country, including the capital Kampala, and whose language Luganda is widely spoken throughout the country. The official languages spoken in Uganda are English and Swahili. The country has a diverse ethnic makeup with various tribes such as Baganda, Banyankole, Basoga, Bakiga, Iteso, Langi, Acholi, Bagisu, Batoro, Banyoro and others.
Uganda has a varied but generally modified equatorial climate. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria shared with Kenya and Tanzania. Uganda’s economy is primarily based on agriculture with coffee being its main export crop. Other major exports include tea, cotton, tobacco, and fish.
