Nyungwe National Park

Nyungwe National Park is a high-altitude tropical rainforest located in southwestern Rwanda, known for its rich biodiversity and habitat for several endangered species. It covers an area of approximately 1000 square kilometers and is home to over 13 primate species, including chimpanzees and colobus monkeys, as well as a variety of birds, butterflies, and plants.

it is home to many species, including chimpanzees. It’s estimated that there are over 500 chimpanzees living in the park, making it one of the largest populations of wild chimpanzees in Africa. In addition to chimpanzees, the park is also home to over 13 species of primates, including the black-and-white colobus monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, and L’Hoest’s monkey.

The park is also home to over 300 species of birds, including the Albertine rift endemics, making it a popular destination for birdwatching. Other species found in the park include forest elephants, bush pigs, and several species of antelopes.

Hiking Trails in Nyungwe Forest

Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda offers a variety of hiking trails that allow visitors to explore the park’s rainforest and its rich biodiversity:

  • Igishigishigi Trail – a 2.1 km loop trail that offers views of the forest canopy and the nearby tea plantations.
  • Kamiranzovu Marsh Trail – a 6 km trail that leads visitors to a large swamp area and offers views of many bird species.
  • Canopy Walk Trail – a 200-meter-long suspension bridge that allows visitors to walk above the forest canopy and offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
  • Isumo Waterfall Trail – a 3 km trail that leads visitors to the impressive Isumo Waterfall.
  • Congo Nile Divide Trail – a 227-kilometre hiking route that passes through Nyungwe Forest and follows the natural divide between the Congo and Nile basins.
