Day 1: Kigali City Tour (Kigali Genocide Memorial) & Departure to Bujumbura, Burundi
In the morning, start your day with a heavy breakfast. At 8:00 a.m. check out from your hotel. At 8:30 a.m. start your day with a short Kigali city tour to learn about Kigali’s bustling city life, Rwanda’s historical background, and the country’s development after the tragic 1994 Genocide against Tutsi which took more than 1 million lives in a span of 100 days, leaving thousands of orphans, widows, and devastated country which is now the fastest growing country in Africa and the world.
Around 9:00 a.m. you will arrive at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where more than 250,000 victims are rested. The memorial's permanent exhibitions provide detailed information about the history of the genocide, its causes, and its devastating impact on Rwanda. These exhibits include photographs, videos, survivor testimonies, and artifacts.
The Kigali Genocide Memorial offers a somber and reflective environment. Visitors are encouraged to explore the exhibitions, take their time to learn about the genocide, and pay their respects to the victims.
Departure to Burundi
After the city tour, around 10 a.m. you will drive from Kigali to Burundi via Akanyaru border, which will take approximately 4 hours. After processing your entry visa to Burundi, you will drive for 2h:30min. to reach Bujumbura- Burundi’s capital, where you will check in to the designated hotel. It may take 6-7 hours from Kigali to reach Bujumbura depending on the road traffic, and the number of stops you make on your way to Burundi.
Later in the evening, you will Enjoy a local dinner at a restaurant by Lake Tanganyika before you check in at the designated accommodation in Bujumbura for a restful night.
Day 2: Rusizi River & Bujumbura City Tour
Start your day with an early breakfast to keep yourself energized for a new adventurous day. After breakfast, you will drive to Rusizi river, situated along the northeastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, one of Africa's Great Lakes, and it encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems, wildlife, and natural beauty. Rusizi river is one of Burundi's key conservation areas and offers visitors the opportunity to experience the country's rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes.
Rusizi river is home to a variety of wildlife species, including hippos, crocodiles, various fish species, and a range of bird species. The lake and surrounding wetlands provide an ideal habitat for water-loving animals and migratory birds. Boat tours allow visitors to experience the park's natural beauty from a different perspective.
It comprises a mosaic of habitats, including wetlands, savannas, forests, and riparian zones. Lunch: After enjoying the morning at Rusizi River, drive back to town for a local food tasting in a local restaurant.
After lunch, you will take time to visit Bujumbura City- Explore the central market for a taste of local life and products, Livingstone Monument, Burundi National Museum (Monument de l’unite national), and Musee Vivant. Later in the evening, if you still have time, go to swim or relax on Tanganyika Lake. Enjoy the sunset over the lake.
After a successful day, you will spend the rest of the evening relaxing and resting at your designated hotel.
Day 3: Departure to Karera Falls & Cultural Experiences
Karera Falls is situated in the southeastern part of Burundi, near the town of Rutana. It's nestled within the beautiful hills and forests of the region, providing a tranquil and picturesque setting. Karera Falls, also known as Chutes de la Karera, is a stunning waterfall located in Burundi. It is one of the natural gems that can be found within the country's diverse landscapes. Karera Falls offers a chance to connect with the natural beauty of Burundi and experience the country's lesser-explored attractions.
Day 4: Gitega historical exploration & Return to Kigali
Early morning, you will have breakfast before embarking on a new exciting day. After breakfast, you will drive back to Kigali via Gitega for historical exploration (Gishora Drum Sanctuary- UNESCO World Heritage Site). Experience traditional Burundian drumming performances and learn about the cultural significance of drums in the country.
After this heartwarming break, you will have lunch in one of the local hotels/restaurants. After lunch, you continue your journey to Kigali. You will arrive in Kigali with immortal memories of the rich history of this beautiful country.
