Day 1: Departure from Kigali and arrival to Burundi

After heavy breakfast, around 09:00 a.m. you will drive from Kigali to Burundi via Akanyaru border, which will take approximately 4 hours. After processing your entry visa to Burundi, you will drive for 2h:30min. to reach Bujumbura- Burundi’s capital, where you will check in to the designated hotel. It may take 6-7 hours from Kigali to reach Bujumbura depending on the road traffic, and the number of stops you make on your way to Burundi.

This trip will give you a glimpse into Rwandan and Burundian local and urban community life, and delve into the cultural, social, and economic life of sister countries.

Later in the evening, you will Enjoy a local dinner at a restaurant by Lake Tanganyika before you check in at the designated accommodation in Bujumbura for a restful night.

Day 2: Rusizi National Park & Bujumbura City Tour

Start your day with an early breakfast to keep yourself energized for a new adventurous day. After breakfast, you will drive to Rusizi National Park, situated along the northeastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, one of Africa's Great Lakes, and it encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems, wildlife, and natural beauty. Rusizi National Park is one of Burundi's key conservation areas and offers visitors the opportunity to experience the country's rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes.

Rusizi National Park is home to a variety of wildlife species, including hippos, crocodiles, various fish species, and a range of bird species. The lake and surrounding wetlands provide an ideal habitat for water-loving animals and migratory birds. Boat tours allow visitors to experience the park's natural beauty from a different perspective.

The park comprises a mosaic of habitats, including wetlands, savannas, forests, and riparian zones. This diversity of ecosystems supports a wide array of plant and animal species, contributing to the park's significance for biodiversity conservation. The park's location along the shores of Lake Tanganyika offers breathtaking views of the lake and its surrounding landscapes. Visitors can enjoy peaceful moments by the water, take boat trips, and explore the park's trails.

Lunch: After enjoying the morning at Rusizi River, drive back to town for a local food tasting in a local restaurant.

After lunch, you will take time to visit Bujumbura City- Explore the central market for a taste of local life and products, Livingstone Monument, Burundi National Museum (Monument de l’unite national), and Musee Vivant. Later in the evening, if you still have time, go to swim or relax on Tanganyika Lake. Enjoy the sunset over the lake.

After a successful day, you will spend the rest of the evening relaxing and resting at your designated hotel.

Day 3: Visit Kibira National Park

Early in the morning, after breakfast, Drive to Kibira National Park. Embark on a guided hike to explore the park's beauty. Kibira National Park is predominantly covered by montane rainforest, characterized by tall trees, lush vegetation, and a diverse range of plant species. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife and provides important ecosystem services, including water regulation. The park is renowned for its biological diversity, including various mammal species, birds, and primates. Animals that can be found in Kibira National Park include chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, duikers, forest elephants, and a variety of bird species.

After visiting the park, drive back to Bujumbura for a late afternoon lunch and relaxation on Lake Tanganyika. Later in the evening, drive back to your hotel.

Day 4: Departure to Karera Falls & Cultural Experiences

Karera Falls is situated in the southeastern part of Burundi, near the town of Rutana. It's nestled within the beautiful hills and forests of the region, providing a tranquil and picturesque setting. Karera Falls, also known as Chutes de la Karera, is a stunning waterfall located in Burundi. It is one of the natural gems that can be found within the country's diverse landscapes. Karera Falls offers a chance to connect with the natural beauty of Burundi and experience the country's lesser-explored attractions.

Day 5: Transfer to Gitega for Historical Exploration and Relaxation at Lake Tanganyika

Early morning, you will have breakfast before embarking on a new exciting day. After breakfast, you will drive back to Kigali via Gitega for historical exploration (Gishora Drum Sanctuary- UNESCO World Heritage Site). Experience traditional Burundian drumming performances and learn about the cultural significance of drums in the country.

After this heartwarming cultural immersion, you will return to Bujumbura for afternoon relaxation at Saga Plage and bid farewells to this country that gave you lifetime memories to cherish.

Day 6: Kigali City Tour & Departure

After a restful night and breakfast, depending on your departure time, you may opt to do a city tour to delve into city’s warm hospitality, rich history and vibrant culture that creates a tapestry of experiences that leave a lasting impression.

Some of the activities that you may choose from in your city tour include but not limited to: visiting the vibrant city center to witness the typical day in the city and business center, visit Nyabugogo-the busiest part of Kigali and the city hub of local and international transport, visit local art galleries (inema art centre, Niyo art gallery, etc.), Visit Kigali Genocide memorial- a place of sombre reflection and remembrance for the Rwandan Genocide that occurred in 1994, during which an estimated 1,000,000 people, primarily of the Tutsi ethnic group, were killed over a span of about 100 days. The memorial aims to honor the victims, educate the public about the genocide, and promote healing and reconciliation.

After visiting the Genocide memorial, you may opt to visit the campaign against genocide museum to learn how RPF Inkotanyi stopped the genocide, visit Question coffee or another local café or coffee shop, visit the convention center, visit Nyandungu ecopark or visit Fazenda Sengha for horse riding, archery, ziplining and more. You may also take time to visit “Made in Rwanda Shops” where you can buy locally-made crafts, clothes and other souvenirs for your self or loved ones. Have a dinner to the one of the rooftop restaurants. Taste one of local dishes or Nyamacoma (brochettes), sip on the best coffee or local beer of your choice before you bid farewell to Rwanda.
