Day 1-2: Arrival in Akagera National Park & Game drive
Upon arrival in Akagera National Park, settle into your accommodation and prepare for an exciting adventure. Embark on a game drive through the park's savannahs, where you'll have the opportunity to spot lions, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, leopards, impalas, giraffes, buffalos, hippos, zebras, more antelopes, and mammals, as well as an array of bird species. Enjoy the breathtaking views of Lake Ihema as the sun sets, and relax in the tranquillity of nature.
On the second day, you will wake up early in the morning, and start a full-day game drive. This is the time animals are very active and undisturbed. You will have a golden opportunity to spot most of the elusive animals you may have missed on the previous day, like lions, rhinos, or leopards. You will also be able to spot many animals in the open savannah in the north.
After a rewarding game drive, you will bid farewell to Akagera National Park with undying memories, and drive to Kigali for the rest of the evening.
Day 3-4: Volcanoes National Park: Culture Immersion and Gorilla Trekking
On the third day, after breakfast, travel to Musanze city, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, home to the magnificent mountain gorillas. Spend this day immersing yourself in the captivating beauty of this volcanic landscape, mesmerizing green sceneries, and countryside lifestyle, visit the twin lakes to absorb the serenity and soak in the harmonious beauty of the interconnected lakes. Delve into Rwanda's rich cultural heritage by visiting local communities near Volcanoes National Park. Engage with the locals, learn about their traditions, and experience their vibrant music and dance. Explore the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village, where you can partake in traditional activities and interact with artisans. Gain a deeper understanding of the country's cultural identity.
On the fourth day, engage in a thrilling gorilla trekking experience, where you'll hike through dense forests, led by experienced guides, to encounter these incredible creatures up close. Witness their behavior, learn about conservation efforts, and marvel at the unique bond between humans and gorillas.
Day 5: Dian Fossey Grave visit or Bisoke Hiking & Transfer to Rubavu.
Dedicate this day to further exploration of Volcanoes National Park. Embark on a scenic hike to the stunning Dian Fossey's Grave, paying homage to the renowned primatologist who dedicated her life to gorilla conservation or exploring the Bisoke hiking trail. Discover the park's volcanic wonders as you explore the picturesque Virunga Mountains and enjoy the views of the crater lake at the summit of Bisoke Volcano. This is a rewarding hike that will leave you with awe-inspiring memories.
After the trek, drive to Rubavu. Spend the rest of the evening relaxing at your hotel, on the shores of Lake Kivu, enjoying the melodious bird songs and waves of the lake.
Day 6: Relaxation in Rubavu
Conclude your adventure in the charming town of Rubavu, located on the shores of Lake Kivu. Relax on the sandy beaches, take a refreshing dip in the lake, or embark on a boat trip to explore the nearby islands. Indulge in delicious Rwandan cuisine at lakeside restaurants, enjoy sunset strolls along the promenade, and take in the breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding landscapes.
After lunch, you will bid farewell to Rubavu city, and travel back to Kigali for airport drop off, or to the designated hotel for the rest of your trip in Rwanda. This will mark the end of your week’s rewarding adventures with endless memories.
